Present Day Regional Islam

Africa

Although scholars do not know precisely how many Africans are Muslim, it is estimated that about 45 percent of the population practice the Islāmic religion. North African nations are almost entirely Islāmic. Islam is also quite common in western Africa, where about half the population is muslim. Large numbers of Muslim also live in eastern Africa and central Africa. Muslims live in southern Africa too, although they are a small minority.

 

Asia

About 40 percent of the population of Southeast Asia is Muslim. Islam is the official religion in Malaysia and Brunei, and one of the official religions of Indonesia. Islam is also the most common religion in Bangladesh, pakistan, Afghanistan, and the Central Asian nations of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. More than 82 percent of the population of Central Asia is Muslim. Muslims also live in other Asian nations, including China, India, and Mongolia.

 

Europe

Several million Muslims live in Europe. Some of them live in Neighborhoods that are predominantly Islāmic and have managed to keep much of their culture from home. Others live in area where they are in a small minority.

 

Middle East

The Middle East is home to the last concentration of Muslims in the world. Islam originated in Saudi Arabia and spread quickly through out the region. Today, about one-fifth of the world’s Muslims live in the Middle East. The population of most Middle Eastern nations is almost entirely Islāmic, and many of these countries have Islāmic governments.

 

North America

Since the late 1980s, hundreds of thousands of Muslims have immigrated to the United States and Canada. These immigrants are continuing their faith and raising their children as Muslims. Many non-Muslim North Americans have also converted to Islam.

 

Oceania

 

Muslims are small minority in Oceania. There are approximately 340,392  Muslims  in Australia, totalling about 2 percent of the population.

About 40 to 50 thousand Muslims live in New Zealand. Fiji’s population is about 8 percent Muslim. Muslims are scattered throughout the rest of the regions.

New Zealand and Australia’s Muslim population have grown steadily for the past centuries.
